Paciencia Y Fe In the Heights

Paciencia Y Fe In the Heights

Attending a live musical theater performance can move the heart and mind in a way that no movie can touch. The best place to fill your senses is by attending a show at Broadway Sacramento which includes Broadway in the Round at Music Circus and Broadway on Tour. A night at Broadway Sacramento is perfect for going with friends or a date. Whether it’s a casual affair or a big to-do, the arts are notorious for bringing together people from different walks of life. Over the last 8 years, I’ve made it a point to catch at least one show each season.  At Broadway on Tour I’ve seen Pippin’, Rock of Ages, Beauty and the Beast, and my favorite The Phantom of the Opera. In 2017 at the Music Circus, I saw On the Town, 9 to 5, Sister Act and Mamma Mia. Last night I had the honor of attending dress rehearsal for In The Heights as part of the Broadway Sacramento Ambassador program.

I have been wanting to see a show written by Lin-Manuel Miranda ever since I first saw a YouTube video of him rappin’ bits and pieces of Hamilton at the White House. I am generally captivated by the sounds and culture of Latin Americans so I knew In the Heights was going to be fantastic! But I’m also a fan of more traditional Broadway shows so I wasn’t sure how unorthodox beats, rhythms and rhymes were going to fit into a musical. Lin-Manuel and Quiara Hudes make it work! The music and storyline found in this performance captures the essence of the Washington Heights neighborhood and pride of the east coast Latin American culture. The sacrifice, celebration, sorrow, patience, faith and love resonated deeply within me. For nearly two and a half hours I lost myself to another place with songs like “Everything I Know”. You are guaranteed to laugh, cry and get the urge to dance during In the Heights!

In addition to the music and story, I also found the people on stage to be a beautiful compliment to the show. The costumes for In the Heights are simple and allow the performers of different shapes and sizes to shine through their vocal abilities and choreography. Had it not been for a musical like this, I wouldn’t see people who look like me on stage this grand.  My takeaway: if you are a person of color, stay true to who you are; keep writing and telling your story. It must be shared. This is the new Broadway.

The thrilling Tony-winning score combines Latin rhythms, hip-hop and pop for an exhilarating journey about chasing your dreams and what it truly means to be home. Broadway At Music Circus premiere.

Are you a first-time patron? Here are a few things to know:

Parking

One of the many things I love about living in Sacramento is the ability to go straight from work to a show. Ride-sharing options like Lyft and Uber make it easy to get to the venues without having to find parking. However if you prefer to drive your own car, the city of Sacramento’s Sac Parks program and ParkMobile app can make your life easier.

Food and Drink

Broadway at Music Circus and Broadway on Tour are both located in Downtown Sacramento. If you’re a foodie like me, you’ll find a diverse range of restaurants and bars to choose from prior to the start of your show. Bring your show ticket and you’ll receive a discount at participating restaurants before and after the show. Most establishments are within walking distance of the theatres too!

What to Wear

Attending a musical theatre performance doesn’t have to be stuffy. In other words, if you want to wear jeans, wear jeans! Do you prefer to wear a dress or a collared shirt and tie?  That’s cool too. A matinee show tends to be a more casual affair as opposed to an evening show. But as long as you’re comfortable and clean, then you’ll be good to go ;)
