Life During COVID-19: Day 49

Life During COVID-19: Day 49

March 13, 2020: On January 25th the state of California experienced their first patient who tested positive for COVID-19. By March 4th, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency. As a result of that declaration, what used to be my normal Walmart grocery pick-up has already turned into an incomplete order. Within a matter of days, the store was sold out of rice, beans and Spam. Rice and Spam are not typically part of my grocery list. However given the circumstances, I know these foods will last a while on my shelf so I thought to order some for those just in case moments. I was surprised to hear both canned and dried beans were already out of stock. My son loves to eat beans so I was upset with myself for not staying on top of the news and going to the grocery store as soon as possible. When the attendant brought the rest of my order to the car she explained that guests were running through the store and filling up their shopping carts with food and paper products. After our brief conversation I told her “thank you” and “be safe”. This was the last time I was able to complete a normal grocery order online with Walmart. Since then I have been unable to order milk, soap, certain cleaning products, paper towels or toilet paper. Canned food have also been limited in quantity. These items now require customers to go inside the store to complete a purchase.
